The original color shot was as drab as a lukewarm bowl of soggy Cheerios. However, the wood railing below the tree intrigued me and I wondered what the image might look like in black and white. It looked a little better in monochrome but still lacked much interest. Processing it in Lightroom, I began to experiment with the color sliders while it was in black and white. Eventually, I pulled up the blue and the sky darkened, and there was the Ah-Ha moment where you realize the image has potential. Next, I slid the green over and achieved that 1930s movie still style that makes you wonder if it is real or on a studio set. For example, the outdoor scenes from the movie Key Largo don't appear perfectly real, but they have a style that is captivating and memorable.

Vanrensalierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05832800330041807392noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-775770154775345495.post-24051406828727495062019-02-24T07:45:00.000-08:002019-02-24T07:45:04.949-08:00The faithful birds, who stay through the winter.

Paul Simon sang praises for Kodachrome, and we do love those
"nice bright colors" but there is still something about Black and
white photography that I love, too. A few days ago, I was looking through some
older photographs and thought it would be interesting to see what I could make
of them in Adobe Lightroom.

The pairs of photos below were originally shot in color.
According to the photo properties, they were both shot with a Kodak "Easy
Share" digital camera in 2001 for Half Dome, and 2004 for Red Rock Canyon.
However, I don't remember having a digital camera then and thought these were
shot with my OM1 film camera. I assume the photo data's memory is better than
mine!

I pulled some of the photos into Lightroom to see what they
would look like as a B and W photos. I was surprised by the results, especially
in light of the fact that it was an older point and shoot, low resolution
digital camera.

The first pair of photos are from Yosemite Valley. The
original was shot in color, and then post-processed in Lightroom using the
selenium setting and then tweaked.

Recently, I have been looking to purchase an active graphics tablet - the kind where you can actually see what you are drawing on the tablet. I have a Wacom Bamboo Create Pen & Touch, which has a lot of nice features, but I find it really difficult to draw on the tablet surface while looking up at the monitor. It works OK for rough sketches but is difficult for more detailed drawings or paintings. So, I started looking at the Wacom Cintiq ($2,400), but it was much too expensive for me. Then I looked at the Yiynova Tablet-Monitor ($450), which was much more affordable but got mixed reviews. I also considered getting an iPad because I saw some impressive You Tube videos of artists using the iPad Retina ($500) for artwork.

But yesterday I was surprised to find this amazing tablet (pictured) at Krogers grocery store of all places, for $2.50! The pen-stylus didn't come with it and I had to buy that separately, but since the tablet was so affordable, I really didn't mind. I chose the upgraded Sharpie with fine and ultrafine points built in one. It doesn't require batteries either!

PROS
+ Absolutely perfect WYSWYG display.
+ saves drawing instantly and flawlessly
+ sizes drawing at 100% every time.
+ wireless
+ zero charge time
+ zero start-up time
+ no batteries, ever!
+ never needs charging.
+ very affordable
+ fully rotational
+ no software to load
+ does not require a computer to operate
+ it can be used anywhere
+ synchronization between the tablet and Sharpie are instant and flawless.

CONS
- No layering
- does not include any software
- limited to 50 drawings
- you must supply your own pen, pencil or marker
- requires a scanner to digitize
- this tablet is not designed for painting

SUMMARY
In spite of the "CONS", I would gladly buy this tablet again. I highly recommend it!Vanrensalierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05832800330041807392noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-775770154775345495.post-54104854723994814522012-08-14T21:18:00.000-07:002017-05-05T21:39:50.544-07:00Electric Motor Shop - Fresno, California

Lightroom is an amazingly powerful photo "developing" program. I am continuously impressed by how much you can increase the visual value of even the least interesting photographs. That isn't to say that I find the Bekins Storage building uninteresting; just the opposite is so. I love interesting architecture, abandoned buildings, and the contrast between eras. Actually, this building is so much more interesting than modern warehouses and storage facilities. My point about the power of Lightroom to convert "least interesting" photos was because the original photo was not taken in particularly good light, but I was able to save the shot by running it through Lightroom.

This dead tree reminded me of so many of the drawings of creepy trees in books when I was a kid. It looks like a screaming monster with a yawning mouth; one hand clutching the earth and the other reaching up to the sky. This scene was shot with a Nikon D90 and then developed in Adobe Lightroom. The tree is on the Buzzard's Roost Trail at Millerton Lake, California.

I'm not a big talker and love to have something to do with my hands when everyone is talking. I don't play games, text, or check e-mail - I'm not that rude. But I love to play with the camera. I used to bring a sketchbook and sketch when I was out with people. In my teens and twenties, that was cool and not only did it not offend anyone, my friends actually liked it. But now at age 51, it is no longer cool and definitely viewed as rude. So, now I bring my smart phone and take pictures at the table. Since everyone brings their phones everywhere now, I can get away with this. Ironically, I am one of the few people who refuses to answer his phone at meals, because that seems rude to me. Now if everyone would just bring sketchbooks and plop them on the table, I'd still prefer that, but I don't live in an art compound, so that's not going to happen.

When everyone is busily engaged in conversation, I snap a few photos of people, which always come out blurry because it is dark. But then I can sneak out a few still life shots, like this one of the wine glass and silverware. It is not a great shot but I like the stark contrast of the black and white image. The photo was not processed in any way. This is it straight out of the camera (HTC Eris). I changed the settings on the camera to BW and was able to steady it well enough to get a decent low light picture.

Here's another way to get a clear low-light picture with a smart phone: The color photo of the parking garage was taken by pressing the phone against the window of the hotel room, which steadied it enough to make it a clear photo. Not a great photo but I was bored. How can cable have so many programs and still have nothing to watch?
Re-post: I am visiting Tucson after 25 years, so thought I'd bring this post from April, 2008 back to the top.

I don't think these are the sort of images that Tucson, Arizona is most remembered for, but I was intrigued by the old abandoned buildings there and took several photos of them in the 1980s. The color image above is a small water color and gouache painting on pressboard. While the warehouse below is a B&W photo.

Note: Here I am in Tucson 25 years later and I was able to find the same building after some searching - the trees threw me off. But here is the same building at 6th and Ash in Tucson - March 2011. The Location of the Water Colour above is still a mystery

This is a detail of an "unfinished" painting that I painted some 20 years ago or more - so, apparently it is finished. I never even gave it a title.

Usually a painting is at least somewhat planned out before you begin painting but this one was a doodle-painting, where I just started painting and let the composition evolve. Some of my own work that I most enjoyed producing, and which seems most interesting to look at are doodle-works.

However, this one and another one are both 90% finished because there was no plan and I found it difficult to resolve the painting when I got to the end. Besides not having a plan, probably the more likely reason the paintings are unfinished is because I started to care about them. There comes this point when I stopped impulsively creating and thought, "Hey I like this. I want to paint a really excellent conclusion to it." And then I was suddenly stymied. Because the whole reason why the painting was going so well was because I wasn't overly concerned about it. It is the most allusive ability to tap into intentionally. But when it happens it is an absolute joy.
Vanrensalierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05832800330041807392noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-775770154775345495.post-47276650136099898772010-12-22T20:57:00.000-08:002010-12-22T21:34:14.663-08:00Fall in Central CaliforniaInland Central California usually has a very short and fall season with little color.

However, this year there was a sudden cold snap where the temperatures went from the 70s to the 30s over night and then stayed in the 50s thereafter. One of my favorite books by Edward Gorey is the ABC book: "The Gashlycrumb Tinies". In which which different children meet with disaster, or even an untimely demise. I love children - I have three children and two grandchildren - so, I can't explain why I think those are funny. I guess it is like slapstick humor - even though someone is getting hurt, there is something funny about the way it is presented and it is nothing like reality. If it seemed the least bit real, I wouldn't be amused by it. It is the extreme contrast from reality that makes it so funny - like the movers who struggle to get the beautiful grand piano up the long stair case and at the last minute drop it down to the sidewalk, smashing in a thousand pieces.

Other then when I was a teenager, I've not done much macabre humor. However, several years ago after seeing before and after weight loss pictures, I was amused by the idea of extreme before and after pictures. I was also amused by the idea of unusually shaped heads with matching skulls. The sketches posted here are the simple doodles that came out of those musings.

Vanrensalierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05832800330041807392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-775770154775345495.post-39478955520417378822010-11-09T07:52:00.000-08:002010-11-09T09:24:43.856-08:00Banana Munching FestoonThis pen and ink drawing, painted with Dr. Martin's watercolours on a watercolour block, was done as an experimental illustration. By that I mean that it appears to be part of a story but there was no story that went with it. At the time, I was considering illustrating children's stories but hadn't written much - hence the illustration without a story.Vanrensalierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05832800330041807392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-775770154775345495.post-57414046843602229692010-09-20T07:58:00.000-07:002010-09-20T08:19:04.802-07:00Alice in Wonderland by John TennielVanrensalierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05832800330041807392noreply@blogger.com1
